What EN12830 addresses
EN12830 is a European standard for temperature recorders used in the transport, storage and distribution of temperature-sensitive goods. It focuses on the recording device: how it measures, how accurately, and whether it is suitable for the intended cold-chain duty. It does not describe the protection concepts used in classified hazardous areas.
Why certified recording matters
Many operations already measure temperature. The difference in a certified cold-chain programme is that the recording device itself has been assessed against a recognised standard and calibrated in a controlled laboratory, so the resulting record can support quality procedures, customer requirements and internal investigation of excursions.

EN12830 compared with ATEX and IECEx
EN12830 answers the question “is this a suitable temperature recorder?” ATEX and IECEx answer the question “is this equipment suitable for a classified hazardous area under that regime?” They are different standards, different variants and different buying decisions. Neither ATEX nor IECEx automatically establishes U.S. Class/Division or NRTL approval, and hazardous-area equipment must always be selected for the specific site classification, jurisdiction and approved installation.
