ATEX vs IECEx: What Hazardous-Area Buyers Need to Know

Two certification systems, one safety objective, and a specification decision that has to be made before equipment is ordered. This guide explains what each system actually is, why the engineering often converges, and why the certificates still are not interchangeable.

Same safety objective, different system

Both systems exist to keep equipment from becoming an ignition source in an atmosphere that can explode. The underlying engineering frequently converges, because ATEX conformity is commonly demonstrated using harmonized EN 60079 standards that are aligned with the IEC 60079 series, while IECEx certifies directly against IEC standards. In practice the protection concepts, construction requirements and type tests can overlap heavily.

What does not overlap is the certification itself. ATEX is a regulatory conformity route within the European Union. IECEx is an international certification system that results in an issued Certificate of Conformity backed by an Ex Test Report and a manufacturer Quality Assessment Report. Converging engineering does not make the two certificates legally interchangeable.

ATEX

IECEx

An international third-party conformity-assessment system. Independent testing produces an Ex Test Report, the manufacturer holds a Quality Assessment Report, and an IECEx Certificate of Conformity is issued.

Can I use ATEX equipment on an IECEx project?

Sometimes a project owner or the authority responsible for acceptance will consider other evidence as part of their own process, and that decision belongs to them. What is not open to interpretation is the representation: ATEX conformity alone does not confer IECEx certification, and equipment certified under one system must not be described as certified under the other. Where a specification calls for IECEx, the correct answer is to source the IECEx-certified variant rather than to argue equivalence.

Do I need both?

Usually not. Select the variant the project and jurisdiction require. EU market access requires ATEX conformity. Many multinational operators and international engineering specifications prefer IECEx. Where a manufacturer offers separate ATEX and IECEx variants of the same device family, the certification is model and variant specific and the correct variant has to be ordered for the intended deployment — one physical unit should never be assumed to carry both.
